Monitoring a Login Process

There are several different ways to monitor a login process. The monitor type you would use to do so depends on the type of authentication that is being used on the page you’re monitoring.

If the webpage is using Form Authentication, you can either utilize the POST Data field in a Web Standard monitor or you can set up a Transaction monitor.

If you opt to use POST data with a Web Standard monitor, keep in mind that you will need to provide the POST data upon the monitor's initial set up and continue to keep the data up-to-date, as the data itself will expire after a set amount of time (which is configured in your web server) or can change if the page being monitored is updated or the login credentials are changed.

If you prefer using a Transaction monitor, simply record the login process with the AlertBot Recorder and provide the saved script to our Help Desk. Our provisioning team will ensure that it passes all tests and will set it up on your account for you. If you do not have the AlertBot Recorder, it can be downloaded through the related links below.

Of the two methods discussed above, the Transaction monitor provides more flexibility as well as additional reporting. This method will test the recorded process using a real web browser and verifies all JavaScript, images, and HTML it encounters. It is also easier to maintain than managing POST data.

If the webpage is using Basic Authentication, you'll need to use the HTTP login and password fields in a Web Standard monitor.

Quotes for additional monitors can be requested prior to adding them to your account by contacting your Account Representative or our Help Desk.
